S T I C H T I N G L E Z E N?
Stichting Lezen (Dutch reading foundation) was founded in 1988 by the Dutch Booksellers Federation, The Dutch Publishers Association and the Public Library Association. Since 1994 the organisation administers the reading promotion on budget provided by the Dutch Ministry of Education, Culture and Science. The objective of Stichting Lezen is to promote reading, both in Dutch and in Friesian (The Netherlands' second official language). The organisation aligns existing activities and encourages the development of new and original initiatives, methods and tools that are instrumental in reading promotion. This includes the promotion of scientific research in this particular field.
Co-operation
Stichting Lezen co-operates with other organisations and institutions that are actively involved in reading promotion, which leads to the creation of local, regional and national networks. Stichting Lezen not only works in close consultation with booksellers' federations, libraries and publishers, but also with universities, business and non-profit organisations, educational establishments, as well as provincial and municipal authorities.
Project policy
In the organisation's policy, priority is given to the target group aged up to 18. Other activities of Stichting Lezen include providing information to third parties and organising campaigns aimed at bringing reading to the attention of a wide public. Since 1998 Stichting Lezen has a chair in Reading Behaviour, which is associated with the University Utrecht.
Stichting Lezen publishes a quarterly information bulletin called 'Lezen' (Reading).
On the policies of the foundation in general
Opportunities
The promotion of reading requires a well thought out strategy that focuses on schools, families and a good co-operation between the two. Children and youngsters, their parents and educators will have to be reached by structural measures over a longer period of time. New reading methods and campaigns to promote reading involving the mass media are crucial in this respect.
Threats
Reading in general is threatened by certain developments. Reading as a leisure activity has to compete with watching television or practising sports. In many families the parents do not see reading as a useful activity. The reading environment at home or at schools is also threatened. Reading out loud, free reading and reading comprehension are not given enough attention.
Participants
Stichting Lezen was founded in 1988 by the Dutch Booksellers Union, the Dutch Publishers Union and the Society of Public Libraries. In a later phase they were joined by the Dutch Daily Press and the Dutch Organisation of Magazine Publishers. Together with ECI for books and records, the foundation SSS (Writers, School, Society) and KiK (Journal in the Classroom)these are the participants of Stichting Lezen.
The Organisation
Stichting Lezen has a board of governors representing education, culture, sciences, the government, trade and industry and the media. The board makes the general policy. The advisory board, that is made up from the participants, gives advice to the board of governors.
